NEWSLETTER N° 4
JUNE 2010

Dear friends

Among other interesting things this Newsletter will introduce you to the  ”package-deal” of your Congress attendance. We present these packages at this early stage in order to help you plan your participation – and – perhaps – apply for grants to go to the Congress.

As something completely new we offer three different options to you: the “full package” and two “5 days packages”. We are convinced that these “half packages” will be appreciated by many colleagues and they will appeal to those of you who want to take part but find that 10 days is a very long time to be away from normal work, as well as to those who may have difficulties in financing a full participation.

W
hat we present to you in this Newsletter is the minimum contents of the packages –  the final package deals  (with extended contents)  will be presented at the launching of the full Congress Programme on January 15th 2011. Read and enjoy.

HOW TO GET FROM THERE TO HERE
Copenhagen Airport Kastrup is the main airport for both Malmoe and Copenhagen. The trains running from Kastrup airport take you to either destination: from Kastrup to Copenhagen Central takes approximately 13 minutes; from Kastrup to Malmoe it takes about 22 minutes.

The train trip between the two cities is 35 minutes. Most of the Congress activities will take place in the city centres, close to four railway stations, two in Copenhagen, and two in Malmoe. Since there are two cities, we also have two festival centres which will be the central meeting places for all delegates. The Festival Centre in Copenhagen will be the Folketeatret (The People’s Theatre), which is just around the corner from the Metro station and the direct train to Malmoe. The Malmoe Festival Centre will be the Malmoe Stadsteater (Malmoe City Theatre), situated right in the centre, close to the Central Station and most of the Congress and Festival venues. There are direct trains, all the way from the Festival Centre in Copenhagen to the Festival Centre of Malmoe and including 2 x 250 metres’ walk the whole trip takes approximately 45 minutes.

Walking distances are longer in Copenhagen than in Malmoe as it is a bigger city. But well functioning urban transportation – busses, metro and even bikes to rent – makes it easy to get around. The festival sites in Copenhagen are at most 15 minutes away if you use the metro.

In the near future we will provide a list of hotels in various price ranges included youth hostels. But to give you a rough idea og the costs: a room at a youth hostel will cost around 27 euros in both cities, although the quality within the cities could differ. A single room with your own bathroom in a standard hotel will costs around 70 – 100 euros.

WHAT WE HAVE BEEN UP TO LATELY

During the past two months we have visited festivals such as the Tweetakt Festival in Holland, the Danish Children’s Theatre festival in Esbjerg, Denmark and the Swedish Performing Arts Biennial for children and young people, bibu.se. in Lund. Niclas also went to Washington to participate at the New Visions/New Voices national working forum for plays-in-progress for young audiences.

During the festivals in Sweden and Denmark we invited two of our  international Advisory Boards, the Festival Advisory Board and the Congress Advisory Board. The purpose of the advisory boards is to involve and include members of ASSITEJ in the preparations of the World Congress and the Performing Arts Festival.

Esbjerg festival
We spent a fantastic week (11-18th of April) at the annual Children’s Theatre Festival in Esbjerg, organised by Danish Teatercentrum. The Congress Advisory Board: Lenora Inez Brown, Kim Woo Ok, Vicky Ireland and Tony Mack and ASSITEJ Secretary General Ivica Simic were specially invited to the festival. Actually we also invited the president of international ASSITEJ, Wolfgang Schneider but due to the ash cloud he couldn’t make it.

During the festival we had three intense, inspirational and very useful meetings, mainly discussing and finding solutions to the practicalities and logistics of the Congress.

After the Esbjerg festival we went to Malmoe and Copenhagen for a site inspection of some of the venues we shall use in 2011 such as: The Opera, Folketeatret, S:t Getrud and of course the magnificent Öresund Bridge which connects Malmoe and Copenhagen.

Bibu.se
Between May 5:th and May 8:th we all attended the biennial, bibu.se in Lund, Sweden. Alex Byrne from the company NIE was invited by ASSITEJ 2011 and he conducted an inspiring actors’ workshop under the title of “Building Bridges, Crossing Borders"

During bibu.se we used the opportunity to have meetings in all our committees: the Seminar and Workshop Programme Committee, the Executive Board, the Festival Selecting Committee and our international Festival Advisory Board. Members of the The Festival Advisory Board are María Inés Falconi (Argentina), Hisashi Shimoyama (Japan) and Etoundi Zeyang (Cameroun). And with no ash-cloud to stop him, Wolfgang made it this time! Yvette Hardie from the Congress Advisory Board also made it from South Africa.
